what is one piece

Theories on what One Piece is/contains.

// One Piece is on Raftel
–> Roger says he left it in “that place.”
–> I don’t think there has ever been anything definitive on this. It’s just implied very heavily!
–> Robin does, however, believe that the Poneglyphs will guide them to Raftel, where the Rio Poneglyph might reside.

// One Piece is a great treasure.
–> Page 1 of Chapter 1.
–> Whitebeard’s proclamation: “One Piece Exists!” Newgate wouldn’t have said this if it was Roger’s personal treasure.

// One Piece is an Ancient Weapon/Uranus
–> Shiki claims that Roger knows the location of a weapon that can destroy the world.
–> Whitebeard says One Piece will turn the world upside down.

// One Piece is the Rio Poneglyph
–> Currently finding panels for this but any fan of the series knows why this might be out there.

// One Piece is Luffy’s Straw Hat
–> Luffy’s “treasure” may have been Roger’s “treasure” as well.
<– Whitebeard’s proclamation: “One Piece Exists!” Newgate wouldn’t have said this if it was Roger’s personal treasure.

// One Piece is the Ultimate Devil Fruit
–> Well, I guess it could be. I don’t know if there’s a lot of evidence out there supporting this.

// One Piece is.. in your heart (nothing).
–> Whitebeard’s proclamation: “One Piece Exists!” Newgate wouldn’t have said this if was nothing.

“Sengoku… All of you… The World Government…
It’s going to come… A grand battle that engulfs the entire world is coming!!!
Not that I care… But whenever someone finds that treasure… The world will return to surprise…!!
Send someone to find it. The day will surely come…
One Piece… It exists!!!”

Whitebeard was too awesome. But he specifically mentions that those “who carry the will of Roger” and now Ace are those who “fight for this world.” Even more importantly, he hints that this will has been passed down “time and time again,” most likely from the time of the Void Century. This all points to One Piece possibly being Poseidon or Pluton, but more likely a third, not yet introduced weapon, being that One Piece will incite a war. Some people argue that the third weapon’s name will be Zeus, being that Poseidon rules the sea, Pluton rules the underworld, and Zeus is the ruler of the sky.

  1. Maybe it’s nothing argument: In my opinion, invalidated by white beards last statement to the world “ONE PIECE EXISTS”. I don’t think he would have said that if it was metaphysical.

  2. My theory on one piece is that it is something powerful enough and damaging enough to spur the population to turn against the world government. The term “will of D.” meaning that the person is born to lead and start the rebellion. What this could be is going to be speculation until the end. However, I don’t believe it could be some devil fruit because it would have to be immensely powerful and trump all others. I do believe it could be some form of information causing Luffy to realize that he has to destroy the world government and unite the ancient weapons one of which he has already befriended.(poseidon)

    • i really like your idea that luffy will unite the ancient weapons to destroy the world government! unite is the perfect word.

      Posted by nanallday | January 26, 2012, 9:05 pm
      • i have been rereading all of them and realizing that pluton never existed it was a design to counter the weapons that existed so does that count as one of the weapons

        Posted by steve | January 30, 2012, 1:35 am
      • this is a really interesting idea! in fact, your post really has me thinking!
maybe noah is an incomplete pluton and those blueprints were the way of finishing it. in this way, it never has fully existed and still serves as a design to counter the weapons as you suggest. this gives franky a much cooler ending than just having built the thousand sunny (which kicks a ton of ass) – he’d be the one who resurrected the ancient weapon/ship the pirate king took the world government down on. i like this a lot because i think oda is a really good writer and this would be an ending that i would be very satisfied with! which is hard, given the amount of buildup the end of one piece already has (in my mind)

      • Actually, with regards to Pluton not existing yet, I’m quite sure that it does already exist. If it didn’t, Franky would have destroyed the blueprints for it many years ago. He only kept them so that, should Pluton be rediscovered (by reading the Poneglyphs that show its location) and used in wrong hands, they would need a weapon of equal power to combat it and so the blueprints were kept for the sake of a potential rebuild of Pluton. That’s just my personal opinion but I totally agree with the idea that Luffy will unite the weapons and probably bring down the government with the help of all the allies he has made on the way, including the many friends in East Blue and the Alabastans and Skypeians and Cyandorans and even the people of Amazon Lily. Not to mention Laboon and Drum Island and The Elbaf Giants, The Saruyama Alliance, Galley La and the Frankies, the Flying Fish Riders, Lola’s crew and possibly her mother (Big Mam). Allies from Impel Down? Now he has allies on Fishman Island! Basically, he has a lot of allies and that’s not even including Shanks’ crew and the Whitebeard crew and allies, Rayleigh and Emporio Ivankov’s Kingdom and probably Dragon and the Revolutionaries. What if Dragon eventually dies and Luffy leads the Revolutionaries with all these allies in tow and overthrows the World Government?! There is just so much possibility. More theories to be made my friends! One Piece for life!

      • oops ignore my last comment about the pluton stuff
but yes that is actually a very slick observation you made – that franky would have destroyed it a long time ago. i agree, 100%!

i like your prediction of luffy leading the revolutionaries – dragon up until this point has seemed pretty invincible though. can’t see how he would die πŸ˜› especially since he hasn’t played a major role in the plot for someone who should be playing such a major role in luffy’s life thus far

one piece for life indeed πŸ˜€ keep the theories coming!

    • Baka !!! One piece is not Weapon nor devil fruit It is a Project?? Combining all East ,South, North,West .sea into one is One Piece Project??? Raftel may have Location of Uranus which sky Weapon??? Thats why Whitebeard said if someone finds Onepiece World would Turn Upside down!! Its Not my theory but I read in another

      Posted by Bishal | June 18, 2013, 5:17 am
  3. also just think of all the groups he is gaining to support him: baratie cooks, alabasta kingdom, skypiea citizens, Pirates saved from Moria, kuja pirates, prisoners (now lead by buggy… could lead to an odd twist ending where luffy is hero but buggy is proclaimed pirate king by world), and fishman island citizens. He definitely has enough support to launch a destructive attack if he called them all up. Some are more likely to make a repeat appearance but I’m almost positive others will. What i mean by the parenthesis is that luffy has stated that the pirate king is the one with the most freedom so, and with his lack of caring for all possessions and titles i could definitely see it happening

    Posted by steve | February 1, 2012, 5:18 am
    • Yep, exactly! All of Luffy’s allies and friends (made from his aptly named ‘most dangerous ability in the world’ as quoted by Hawkeyes) will join to make a devastating army to fight for Luffy. Hahaha I think it would be absolutely hysterical if Buggy was mistakenly crowned Pirate King. I can see Luffy not wanting to be called Hero, but he’s been pretty adamant about the whole ‘becoming the Pirate King’ thing so he might not appreciate it. BUT, I do agree that Luffy might just disregard the title and only care about the freedom itself and that would actually be quite a romantic dusk (yeah, I know I’m funny) to the adventure.

    • i Think ruffy himself is one piece cause his the real son of roger

      Posted by Tschai | October 31, 2012, 8:37 am
  4. I think it quite unlikely that One Piece is a weapon of any sort, seeing as it is Roger’s personal treasure and considering his nature I believe it probably is held much closer to his heart and Oda himself would never make the main story-line something as cliched and shallow as a super powerful weapon. I cannot in any way speculate what it might be but I do believe it is something very tangible. I also doubt that it is the Rio Poneglyph but it is very likely that it relates to the Ancient Kingdom and the Void Century. It will almost certainly help overthrow the World Government and will somehow reinstate the peoples of the Ancient Kingdom in a more fair place of power. As for Pluton and Poseidon, we have seen Poseidon’s existence and we know that the blueprints for Pluton have been destroyed so it can never be built again. However, the original Pluton still exists somewhere in secret as it was said that only an ancient weapon can combat its likeness. Thank you for this website. It’s great to see people following the continuity of this magnificent universe as closely as myself. There is so much depth and adventure behind One Piece that I cannot help but read through it over and over again, vainly attempting to pick up any shreds of information that might reveal the future to me. This is quite a definitive site and I hope you continue to work on it and I will continue to put in my input as a fellow fan. Oda, you are a Master.
One last point. I think that Luffy’s hat, being passed on from Roger to Shanks and then himself, has something to do with something and could very well be linked with One Piece itself.

    Posted by Sid | February 16, 2012, 10:11 pm
    • thanks for the comment sid! i hope you contribute often – i love the ideas and i’ll be updating the op/pluton/ak-void century pages soon. i’m just super swamped for the time being

that said, i like the idea that one piece probably isn’t any sort of weapon. you’re right in that it’s roger’s personal treasure but if it was so personal i don’t see why he would want everyone in the world looking for it. for example, if luffy hid his hat somewhere, i don’t think he would have told people to go look for it on his execution platform πŸ˜›

can pluton truly never be built again? i ask because i don’t know if we can say this definitively. i’ll look in to it!

i honestly do this because i love the series and i know i can’t be the only one. i’m so happy that other people are finding it and enjoy reading it as much as i enjoy compiling it πŸ™‚

  5. Knowing Franky and his genius mind, he might actually remember the entire blueprint just from his own memory but that’s probably not gonna be the case. Franky does seem astonished at the complexity of the whole thing but if anyone could do it, it would be Franky and Den. I noticed the other post about Franky and Den potentially fixing Noah for it to become Pluton. I was wondering if you meant that it is already the unfinished version of Pluton, or if you meant that he would be turning it into the weapon completely from his head. I think if it was unfinished Pluton, Franky would’ve recognised it immediately from at least some parts of it. If he would just turn it into Pluton, this would be difficult and I don’t know how conceivable it is to outfit and modify an already built ship into the greatest naval masterpiece of all time, especially one as big as Noah. It’s totally a possibility though and it totally links to the theory that Luffy will return and somehow fulfill the prediction of destroying FI. I like to think that if Noah was to become Pluton and carry the people of FI away from that oppressive place, Luffy will destroy it for the sake of destroying Mariejois which is directly above (not counting the 20,000 metres of Red Line rock between them). Perhaps when Luffy confronts Mariejois, he will destroy it and inevitably cause Fishman Island to be destroyed (hopefully intentionally for the sake of Fish and Merfolk).

    Posted by Sid | February 21, 2012, 2:01 am
    • hmm you bring up a great counterargument because i definitely meant that noah was an unfinished pluton

      – wouldn’t franky have recognized it already: i would say.. yeah, he should’ve! so either noah is NOT pluton unfinished or he doesn’t remember the blueprints. i wonder if den will have anything to do with this but i will definitely add this to that page as a great counterpoint. thanks man! i love it

  6. hello there! i just love your site! it’s so helpful and comprehensive. i always check for your updates. anyway, getting straight to the point i wanted to ask what is your opinion about that crazy OP spoiler (or rather a really comprehensive theory abt what One Piece and the void century is) that started to float around the net about a month ago i think.. i believe there was a one piece wikia page for it but it was deleted. anyways, have u read that? i really wanna know your take on that because one of the reasons why i like dropping by this site is because your reasoning and thought organization is one of the most helpful and objective i’ve come across when reading OP discussions.. (btw, the theory i’m referring to is the one heavily leaning towards the origin of the skypieans/shandians/bilkans etc and their exodus from the moon to earth as was shown in Enel’s mini arc). appreciate your thoughts. thanks for your hard work as always. πŸ™‚

    • So I’ve read the crazy OP spoiler and I won’t lie: it’s convincing. It’s really, really good. So good that I’ve purposefully not used it on this site, but I think that parts of it have been disproven now. The Skypiean/Shandian theory is still really good and I’ll summarize it here at some point. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention! I’ll address it soon πŸ™‚

  7. One Piece could be the “Secret of D”, which could be written on the Rio Poneglyph. It could also contain information on the Void history, and how the world government showed up in that era. I think that in the True History (Void history), there were indeed pirates that had tried to take over a kingdom. The kingdom tried to defend themselves using an ancient weapon (pluton, poseidon, ect). However, the pirates also had ancient weapons, and managed to take over the kingdom. The pirates, then used the ancient weapon to seperate the ocean around that land, making it unreachable. This causing the land to split apart, and creating the 4 blues (north, south, west, and east), the red line, and the grand line. The name of the pirates were called the world government pirates (Five elder star, Nobles, and the Marines) that’s why they have their own (pirate) flag and ant to govern the whole world. The ancient kingdom recorded all the events into what are known today as poneglyphs, but the only one to record the great war between them and the world government, along with the events that happened during that time was the rio poneglyph.

    • did you get this from the big comprehensive spoiler that somebody brilliantly put together?
pretty much all of it makes perfect sense except i think that theory has poseidon not being shirahoshi, which invalidated parts of it

but this is absolutely possible but i want to ask you: what do you think the secret of d is?

  9. As for me One Piece is the treasure that contains the information about The Lost History which is to be called the Void Century. Which Nico Robin and Her People of Ohara whole heartedly pursuing the truth about the history of the world. The People of Ohara is eagerly want to know what just exactly happened to those years. It will reveal all about the History of The Ancient Kingdom, The World Government, The Origin of Devil Fruit, The Will of The D. at those time period..As we all know The Ancient Kingdom in their era is the most famous, strong, prosper and advanced in terms of knowledge, power, wealth, popularity, and advanced in technology.and most importantly thier political and goverment administration is good as for their people they impose true justice of truth and freedom. And they have this 3 Ancient Weapons at their disposal namey Pluto, Poseidon and Uranus. The 20 Kingdoms joined Alliance together and declared a war to the Ancient Kingdom imposing that the 3 Ancient Weapon of mass destruction is great threat to them. But I think the real reason The 20 Kingdoms attacked and wanted the Ancient Kingdom to be over thrown is The Mystical Tree that produces fruits that granted a person a mystical power that we called The Devil Fruit. The 3 Ancient Weapon was build as the the Main Defense of the Ancient Kingdom for those Kingdoms who would dare to get to this Mystical Tree. As the story goes The Ancient Kingdom defended their country for how many years. As the years pass by, they seemingly see that they would be defeated by the 20 Kingdoms. So they incarved the detail of History for the next generation of the future into the blue stones that is industructible in so what we called Poneglyph. You Know the story aterwards..

Remember The Marineford Episodes It all reveals to whom is Roger is talking about. It was Luffy is gonna find the treasure and he’s gonna be the one who will lead an army that will challenge the World Government into a war. As Whitebeard said. And also Mihawk say in that episode what is Luffy true power is not his gum-gum fruit or his skills in fighting but bring people and rally on his side…The will of the D for me is the will to pursue our dreams in life and fight for your freedom. To protect what is important to us.

  10. D means freedom

    • i don’t disagree and i think a lot of people would feel the same way. but it seems too.. i dunno. i get this impression that everything we’ve ever thought, oda has read and put on a list of things to NOT do

or maybe it’s just what i expect because he’s so far been able to surprise me every single damn time

  11. One Piece episode in Sabaody Arc for Nico Robin her greatest treasure in Life is her friends. He who find a True friend is a blessed one. Treasure it cost is worth its value.

    Posted by Hero | February 16, 2013, 8:59 am
  12. I think the One piece is an letter from Gold Roger to the founder
He maybe wrote that the Crew who found iit have finsh her dreams and it is the end of theirs Journey and they had complete the Jorney with theirs friendship or something

Wen you all understand my Theory

    Posted by OpFan | June 5, 2013, 5:33 am
  13. one piece is juz a mountain of gold..thats all..end of story people! dont twist your mind

    Posted by smoker | November 24, 2013, 9:37 am
  14. I dont think one piece is something in itself like a weapon or gold,..thats just not something luffy would care about and it seems everybody misses that, thats not his character…I think one piece is the bond between luffy and his crewmates or something similar(like the hat idea),..in a sense they are “one piece” so to speak and when Gold Roger said he left it all at Raftel he in my opinion meant the true realisation of a neverending bond for those who attain true freedom by reaching the end of the Grand Line which encompasses all the wonder and adventure of the one piece world…Honestly,I would be very disappointed if one piece turns out to be something like a weapon and I think if you really get what One Piece is about, you’d agree with me on this…

    Posted by Frisbee | April 20, 2014, 11:10 am
    • hey fris, thanks for the comment
it’s not that i disagree with you because how could i – great idea and yeah, that is what luffy wants

but one piece exists independent of luffy’s own existence/personal wants also
so if luffy were to hand down ‘one piece’ to the next generation, i’d say what you’re saying would be a great fitting end
but this time around one piece has to be something. which is crazy to think about but there are some great explanations out there already πŸ™‚

      Posted by nanallday | April 27, 2014, 5:30 pm
  15. The One Piece may be a money and gold treasure, the blueprints of all dangerous weapons, the power of the ultimate Devil fruit (maybe Gomu Gomu) to eat about two or three devil fruits as it expands and contracts, the Void century on the Rio Poneglyph and Roger’s diary of his journey which will remind Luffy of his awesome adventure.
