other mangas i recommend

Disclaimer: I go on a little rant here, so feel free to skip down to the second set of bold words you see below for the recommendations.

So I feel like this would be of value: I’ve read One Piece and I love it, what’s next?
I believe that when you like something, be it music, a TV show, a manga, and so on, that the reason you like it is because it somehow expresses something that maybe you wish you could but can’t… or that it speaks to you in a way other music, TV shows, and manga don’t.

In that same vein, the reason One Piece is so damn appealing to me is because if I had to describe my belief system, it’d go something like:
– everything can be rationalized and therefore should be logical
– people should have conviction and live morally. “A man’s gotta have a code” – Omar, The Wire
– life is important and is meant to be enjoyed
– humor, in even the most serious of situations, can be a damn good thing
– and if you should believe in something, believe in friendship, integrity and freedom
Without question, One Piece exemplifies this. Luffy lives his life this way and I won’t lie: I’m jealous. How many people can just pick up, leave and live entirely free? I guess only a pirate.

With all that in mind, here are some other anime and manga titles I really enjoyed, and hopefully you might as well. These are in no particular order, because they are all amazing and their authors, who spend their entire lives conceiving and creating these stories, should be applauded. In no way is this list comprehensive, but these are a few that I highly recommend:

Liar GameRead Online // Series Back From Hiatus!
–> A tournament of the world’s greatest liars. Why aren’t you reading this RIGHT NOW? Text heavy and it makes you think. If you like Death Note, you should like Liar Game.
Code Geass – Watch Online // Series Complete
–> This one is harder to describe. People say it’s a mix between Death Note and Gundam. I won’t disagree. Lelouch (main protagonist) is one of the greatest characters I’ve ever seen.
Hunter X HunterRead Online :: Read Online :: Watch Online // Series Back From Hiatus!
–> Let me tell you something. In Japan, nobody cares about Naruto and Bleach at all. It’s all Hunter X Hunter and One Piece. It’d be more popular but it went through a series of seemingly random hiatuses. Nonetheless the story and world is great and connected much like One Piece. I hope that convinces you to read it.
Full Metal Alchemist – Watch Online (Brotherhood) :: Read Online // Series Complete
–> A world where science and magic are one! Had to say that. It’s nothing like Thor and the plot is great.
Eden of the East – Watch Online // Series Complete
–> A guy wakes up in front of the White House naked, with no memories and a cell phone.
One OutsRead Online // Series Currently Running
–> If you like baseball, you’ll like One Outs. If you like Liar Game/Death Note, you’ll probably like One Outs. It’s about a gambler and I don’t really want to go any further in detail, but I probably will later when I flesh this section out more.
PsyrenRead Online // Series Complete
–> I really want to recommend this more because the beginning is really, really awesome. It loses something in the middle there, though, but the plot is still really good.
Death Note – Watch Online // Series Complete
–> If you don’t know about Death Note, then I guess I should point out the fact that this series is banned in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang in China. Otherwise, Light and L are two of the greatest characters in anime.
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! – Read Online // Series Currently Running
–> This one is really good natured and fun, with some bad-assery sprinkled through out. The first volume or so seem entirely without plot, but rest assured, it sets up something worth reading. The truth is, the major questions are only beginning to be revealed (12/1/2011) and I’m definitely excited to find out what the answers are!

I’ll add more later when as I think them up. Of course you can read Naruto and Bleach as well!

  1. You should also recommend Berserk. It’s certainly dark and comes out infrequently, but there is a large body of work, it’s unique, and is highly regarded. It’s got great artwork and a really interesting, different story covering intense battles.

  2. I would also highly recommend Hajime No Ippo. It’s a long running boxing manga that is hilarious and well done. The anime is great also.

    Cheers.
